Wow, congratulations, you and Water Goddess have survived some really tough stuff.
While no one ever wants horrible things in their life, in the long term, it isn't always bad. When you realize that you are dealing with it, that you are getting through it, that it takes time, but you are getting there, you should also realize you have all sorts of strengths and insights and hopefully compassion that you wouldn't otherwise have.
All of you, you have gone through so much to leave the WT, need to appreciate yourselves more. You have demonstrated courage and determination, and I respect that.

Anyone know anything about 'Chelation'
by Simon inmy dad is considering having this treatment and i wonder if anyone knows anything about it or has any personal experience of it.. http://www.ephca.com/chelther.htm.
thanks

Chelation is both standard procedure for treatment of heavy metal poisoning, and an extremely contoversial treatment for heart and circulatory problems.
If you are researching this, make sure that the information does not come from a site where someone can get financial benefit from promoting it's use. It isn't covered by healthcare where your Dad lives, and isn't approved as an efficacious treatment.
Have a look at: http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/chelation.html -

The Press doesn't seem very eager to take up any of these stories. I can only speak for where I live. The teenage girl refusing blood was a big issue last week, and I couldn't find a single word in the local paper about it, today. I don't know if it is because there is no new news about it, or if the press is reluctant to take on the Watchtower Organization who we know is good at hiring lawyers. I'm guessing that at least one of you must have sent the local and national reporters some information or at least web sites. Perhaps when the Olympics is over, or the teacher's strike is settled, there will be more interest from the media to look more deeply into the situation. Never the less, I wouldn't count on the press.

Many different groups call their religion the truth. Either there is no truth or many truths. From what I know (which is very little compared to the rest of you here), all the world's major religions teach to be nicer, kinder, better people to one another. We take this message and get rid of all the nit picking around it. Maybe there is something bigger than us, that speaks to different people with a different voice........or maybe we're alone out here.
I don't know.

What the Society expects of its members
by Xander ini was reading through some old quotes at the quotes.jehovahswitnesses.com site, and had something of an epiphany.
it is simultaneously revealing and revolting, and i'd like to share it.. what the society expects of its members.
the society expects its members to live and *die* for their teachings [yes, everyone here knows it - the society expects you do die for their teachings if necessary].. and, at the same time as you lie there dying for their beliefs, expects you to accept (?joyfully?

That is why we outsiders get so baffled by it all. I guess the mind control is beyond our comprehension.

Hello DC,
Welcome to the board.
My daughter, "Little Red Birdie" posted here a few times, but got busy with her own life again. She had a bit of a rough time for a bit from other posters who thought she was a troll. She also got fed up with JW stuff (now if she would only lose the JW boyfriend, sigh......)Birdie is 14. How old are you? -

Hi Island Woman,
I think you will be pleased to see how much even farther your son grows in the next few years. Like I said, my kids have always been thought to be mature for their age, but my son's thought process really seems to have changed somehow, epecially in the last 6 months. I don't know if it because he is in university or just a maturation process. I saw a part of a show recently on teenage neurology explaining how there is actual major physiological changes in the brain of teenagers, which affects how they process information. I wish I had seen all of it, as it was fascinating.I don't know your children, as you don't know mine, so we are speaking in generalities. As I said, and it is my personal opinion only, that I believe society has a responsibility to protect children from death, even self inflicted. The younger the child is, the more vulnerable he/she is to outside influences. Perhaps, because I have never been JW, I am not being sensitive to someone who believes that this would be placing their spiritual health below their physical health. I also would not believe in forcing continued medical treatment on anyone when there is no longer any hope. Laws tend be be made to protect those who need it, which sometimes means that individual rights are less important.
For my own kids, if there was no rational reason such as quality of life , I would fight like HE**, to keep them alive or convince them of the value of the continuation of their life. Again, my own personal situation only, as I have been involved with someone (an adult)who wished to end their life, was not allowed to, and was very happy about it after the fact.
The question you bring up regarding age and self determination is an excellent one, and has led to the current debate in Alberta and all of Canada. There is certainly no easy answer.

This is my personal opinion only based on my experience with my 2 kids. They are age 14 and 18, both honor students in advanced academic programs, well rounded with regard to social activities, music, friends, and both generally considered to be very mature for their age. We get along very well. The 18 year old, especially, has a lot of autonomy, which he has demonstrated the ability to handle.
I can see huge differences in maturity and especially judgement between a 16 year old and 18 year old. At 18, my son can step back a bit better and be more objective in his evaluation of things. He is more open minded and extremely questioning of many things, including, his parents, religion, and why things are the way they are. He very definately makes his own decisions, but is able to reason and explain what they are based on.So, to answer your question, I don't think a 16 year old should be allowed to choose death over their life. They would be more likely to be intimidated into agreeing with their parents. They have less independence, less judgement and less experience to base their decision on. I don't care what their religion is.
A couple of years can make a huge difference. I know it differs with every individual. I think preserving the life of a child, even an older child, is worth it. My personal opinion.

Scully, you are quite right. Those issues were brought up when the lawyer was interviewed on the radio this morning. He is basing his whole case on the issue of her being a mature minor and having rights over her own body. He almost seemed to be trying to ignore the issue of religion completely.
It is going to be a complicted issue.I think it would have got even more press, but we also have a 3 week old teachers strike here...or did..they were just ordered back to work, so that is going to get ugly, too.
